Can Uber go into Malaysia?

So recently I have heard of various drivers getting bookings which take them into Malaysia. I can absolutely see why riders would think of this. Just check out the price! Aeon Mall Bukit Indah, by the way, is the location of the nearest A&W outlet in Malaysia. Just so you know :)

Probably cheaper than the taxi ride to Woodlands Checkpoint
However, should you do it if you get such a trip? and can you drive smove cars into Malaysia, even for personal trips?

The answer to both questions is, unfortunately, NO.

Firstly, it is illegal for private-hire cars like Uber/Grab to operate across the causeway for a fee. Check out this news dated June 2016: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/paid-cross-border-car/2888196.html

Furthermore, there are other issues related to this: did you bring your passport with you? are you going to pay for the roaming charges to end trip in Malaysia? Also, Uber will not pay for any of your tolls in and out of Malaysia. And just check out the fare! Would you like to queue for hours in the jam, both going over and coming back, for that measly $18?

Lastly, for smove drivers, their cars are currently not allowed to go into Malaysia. Not even for personal use. So there you have it!

Speaking of which, I think Uber should look into this and update their app to disallow bookings which go to Malaysia or other ridiculous locations! I have seen screenshots where Uber allows bookings to exotic places like China. Silly cases which should be easy enough to detect and disallowed automatically.

So what should you do when you start trip and realise the destination is in Malaysia? One way would be to ask rider to amend the booking to somewhere reasonable, such as Woodlands Train Checkpoint. He can then walk over to the immigration and sort out the rest of the journey himself. There are other options which you can think of yourself. Just don't get caught, and always think about the consequences before doing anything ;)
