Several newbies to driving Uber have asked me if they need to know Singapore roads well in order to drive Uber. This is definitely a concern for many people, since even people who own cars may not necessarily travel through every nook and cranny of Singapore. And to give recognition where it is due, taxi drivers do have to go through a fairly intensive course to pretty much memorize most of the roads in Singapore.
Now, the Uber Driver app is well-integrated with Google Maps and Waze. You can choose which app you prefer, although personally I use Google Maps because that's what I'm more comfortable with. When you accept a booking, a "Navigate" button appears at the top right corner of the screen. Tapping on it will automatically key in the address of the rider and start Google Maps/Waze. Similarly, when you pick up the rider, the "Navigate" button appears once you start the trip, and you can seamlessly follow the navigation instructions.
So, do you really need to know Singapore roads well? I have to say some knowledge is definitely helpful, since the GPS apps are pretty good but not 100% perfect. Also, the apps may not necessarily point you to the correct pick-up point, especially for shopping malls and the like, and some local knowledge may be necessary to ensure a smooth pick-up. Lastly, even though the apps are usually accurate, knowledge in your head will certainly give you more confidence and less stress!
Nonetheless, not to worry if you don't have Singapore at your fingertips. These are skills which you will definitely gain with experience, especially if you put in some effort to observe the roads and buildings, and try to remember what you see. In no time, you will be driving without relying too much on the GPS!
What if you do make a wrong turn? Remember, it's not the end of the world.
Make a U-turn when it's safe to do so. Let the GPS guide you back. Call the rider to explain the situation if you don't want him to cancel on you. Apologize if he's in the car. It's an unfortunate situation, but with some humility, it shouldn't get any worse than it absolutely is. Then, learn from your mistake and move on!
Personally, I was quite unfamiliar with many landmarks and roads in Singapore when I started driving Uber, and it is a huge source of satisfaction to get to know my own country better! You can join me and get paid while you're at it, too. Sign up today and get some cash and free rent to try it out!
