Uber is NOT your friend

That's right, Uber is NOT your friend. Even they don't pretend to be your friend, instead calling drivers "partners."

So why even drive for Uber in the first place?

The understanding is that business partners are not friends, and each partner looks out for his own interests.

In this case, Uber sets the rules, and by choosing to earn money by driving for them, we have to accept all their rules. However, we can study their rather complicated incentives structure, and optimise the way we play to maximise our own benefits. And as fellow drivers, we are (kind of) friends since we are not exactly competing against each other. The incentives are there for everyone, and by sharing tips to help each other get incentives, doesn't cause us to lose our own incentives. Lastly, the more Ubers are on the road, the easier it is for passengers to book a Uber, making their experience better and thus leading to more customers for us!

It is important to realise that there is no "ultimate right answer" for driving strategy, and that the best laid plans tend to screw up in the real world. Nonetheless, having a plan helps to reduce stress while driving and could help earn a few extra dollars.
