In my first checklist of accessories needed for Uber-ing, I listed some items, such as cash, car charger, etc. As a classic example of why you should keep checking this blog regularly, I've discovered 2 more items which are important.
1. Portable charger. My last trip nearly gave me a heart attack when I discovered that the 12V outlet for my Remax car charger wasn't working. Luckily I'm using Sony Xperia phone, which has legendary battery life wahahahaha. Immediately I called smove, and they told me to check the glove compartment, which does have a USB outlet. Unfortunately, my phone somehow couldn't charge from this port. Maybe because it is USB Type C, too new :( I then received $10 smove credits, and had to ration my battery life by reducing screen brightness and turning off navigation on expressways etc. (Even legendary phones can't handle the load of a super bright screen and navigation, unfortunately.) Luckily, managed to finish the evening with 20% of battery left.
Moral of the story: bring a portable charger to solve such problems, and do the next guy a favour and call smove to feedback :)
2. Bluetooth headset. Remember this story?
A driver claimed that he caused an accident because his charging cable was tangled with the steering wheel. From the dashcam of another driver, it sure sounds like a cool story, but personally I've nearly gotten my wired headset entangled in my steering wheel before. The chances of this happening is somewhat higher in this job, since we often have to call passengers to "politely pressure" them to come down quickly, or smove to extend booking. Finally decided to get this Bluetooth headset (Remax RB T9) for $12.50. It's even cheaper on qoo10.com or Carousell.com!
Wondering what's the fuss all about? I'm just sharing some tips for fellow part-time or beginner Uber or UberFlex Club drivers so that they can learn from my experiences. Keen to try it out on your own but not sure why you should do it? Check out my story and sign up for a low-risk, high-earnings trial of Uber-ing!
